Originally from New Mexico, Don relocated to Montana in 1974 and founded Country West Ranch & Land, LLP in 1983. A 35-year veteran of the real estate profession, Don attended the University of Kansas and received Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration and Economics, Business Education, and a Masters degree in Administration and Counseling. He also spent two years in the military as an infantry officer with airborne/ranger and Special Forces designation.

While at the University of Kansas, Don started and lettered 3 years in football and baseball. Before entering the real estate profession, he coached high school and college football for 14 years.

As a real estate professional, Don has a GRI designation, was past chairman of the Professional Standards Committee for the Farm & Land Institute, and is a member of the Bozeman Marketing Forum, Bozeman Farm & Ranch Marketing Group, Gallatin Association of Realtors, Montana Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. Don recently served on the board of directors of the Gallatin Valley Land Trust, an organization that places Conservation Easements on farms, ranches and recreational property. He is a firm believer in responsible stewardship and conservation for ranch land, wildlife, fisheries, timber resources, rangeland and farmland. He is a member of Trout Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and The Elk Foundation.

Don and his wife Betty, also KU Jayhawker, live on their ranch on the East Gallatin River, with lots of whitetail deer and pheasants, their four horses and dog Mini. Don hunts both big game and birds, fly fishes as much as possible, and enjoys horseback riding.
